Madrid, the Prado, Room 52B, ground floor.

A room set apart from the big ones. Most visitors pass through without slowing down, on their way up to the Velázquezes and the Goyas.

Some of them stop short, though. They turn back and step closer.

A seated woman, turned three quarters toward the viewer, one hand resting on the other, a thin veil over her hair. Behind her, rocks and water.

Everyone knows that pose, that smile. They're printed on mugs, tote bags, refrigerator magnets.

But this is not the Louvre. This is Madrid. And she isn't the woman you remember: lighter, more colorful, younger, her features sharper.

A question settles in, and nothing in the room answers it. Where does this painting come from, and who painted it?

By Leonardo's Hand

In 1666, a scribe takes inventory of everything the king of Spain owns in his Madrid palace. The panel is a painting on wood. In front of it, he writes: a woman, by the hand of Leonardo da Vinci.

By the hand of Leonardo. No hedging, no mention of his circle. An original.

The inventories that follow repeat the attribution for nearly two centuries, and its value keeps climbing. The painting follows the royal family from residence to residence, hanging in the king's private apartments.

In 1819, the Prado opens and the royal collections move in. The panel enters the museum as a Leonardo.

The Woman from Florence

If the inventories are right, there is a problem. This same face already has a Leonardo. It hangs in Paris, and it is the most famous painting in the world.

What is known about it fits in a few lines. It depicts Lisa Gherardini, 24 years old in October 1503, married for nine years to Francesco del Giocondo, a silk and cloth merchant who took her as his second wife. That is where the painting's other name comes from: La Gioconda, Giocondo's wife.

That October, a clerk in the Florence city offices notes in the margin of a book that Leonardo da Vinci is working on the head of Lisa del Giocondo. No earlier written record of the painting exists.

Leonardo is 51. The portrait keeps him busy for years. He never delivers it, and no record of payment has ever been found.

The painting follows him from city to city, all the way to France, where Leonardo dies on May 2, 1519.

On one side, the portrait he never parted with. On the other, a second version in the hands of the kings of Spain.

The Wood of the Panel

In the twentieth century, the Prado gradually stops calling it a Leonardo. The name fades from the museum's records, with no announcement and no explanation.

The painting itself stays on the wall, among the Italian masters, between a Raphael, an Andrea del Sarto and Fra Angelico's Annunciation. On the rare occasions it is taken down, visitors write to the museum demanding it be put back.

Then, in 1992, a specialist in old master paintings publishes the explanation that closes the debate. His answer fits in one line: the panel is oak.

Oak is the wood of northern European painters. The Italians of the Renaissance painted on other woods. An oak panel was not painted in Florence.

This painting is a copy, made far from Italy, long afterward, from the finished original. Case closed.

The Letter from Paris

The case stays closed for 18 years. In 2010, a letter arrives from Paris. The Louvre, preparing a major Leonardo da Vinci exhibition, wants to borrow this painting.

Nothing justifies the request. Europe has dozens of old copies of the Mona Lisa, and nobody pays them any attention.

The one in Madrid is considered among the weakest of the lot. The Prado's catalogue does not even give it a serious entry.

And that is the one Paris asks for, without explaining its choice.

One fact sets it apart from all the others, though. The old copies of the Mona Lisa all look like the painting in Paris. The one in Madrid is the only one that does not.

Before a loan, a museum checks the condition of the painting. In June 2011, the panel goes down to the Prado's conservators. It comes out of its frame and onto an easel.

The Prado's wood panel specialist turns it over and examines the back.

The back is not oak. It is walnut. A dense, expensive wood, reserved for painters who could afford it.

The oak theory has just lost the one fact it rested on. Leonardo da Vinci painted The Lady with an Ermine, La Belle Ferronnière and Saint John the Baptist on walnut.

The Paris Mona Lisa, meanwhile, is painted on poplar.

Under the Black Paint

The Prado is left with a panel nobody knows how to classify anymore. Everything starts over.

The painting sitting on the easel in 2011 does not look like the one Room 52B shows today. Behind the woman, no rocks, no water: a sheet of black paint rises all the way to the edge of the frame.

Ana González Mozo, whose job at the Prado is to study what lies beneath the surface of paintings, starts with that abnormal background.

Beneath the black, shapes emerge. Curved lines, climbing. Mountains.

The black does not belong to the painting. Someone laid it down long afterward, over an entire landscape, and no document says who, or why.

The museum decides to remove it. A conservator works through the black layer with cotton and solvent, centimeter by centimeter, for four months. Under each pass of the cotton, a piece of rock, a patch of sky.

The landscape that reappears is the one visitors look at today in Room 52B. And that landscape is the landscape of the Paris Mona Lisa. The same rocks, the same water, in the same places.

An identical backdrop proves nothing by itself. But the Madrid landscape is not finished. The painter laid in the bottom, worked his way up toward the sky, stopped partway and never touched it again.

A copyist does not stop in the middle of a sky. The original in front of him is complete, from the first rock to the last.

The Buried Drawing

The Prado writes to Paris in turn, to request the images the Louvre has made of its Mona Lisa by photographing it under light that penetrates the paint and shows what lies beneath.

Beneath the paint of a picture, a drawing remains. The painter traces his lines, then paints over them and the lines disappear. This light brings them back into view.

On the Paris Mona Lisa, the buried drawing shows Leonardo feeling his way.

Lisa's waist, her belt, first placed lower, then raised. The fingers, drawn in one position, then moved. The outline of the veil is reworked, and so is the outline of the head. The paint has covered them for five centuries.

In Madrid, the two sets of images are placed side by side, the Paris Mona Lisa on one screen, the Prado panel on the other.

Beneath the Madrid paint, the drawing carries the same hesitations. In the same places.

Someone copying a finished painting sees only its surface. Nothing can tell him where Leonardo first placed Lisa's waist.

Then comes the chair. Leonardo drew the right arm of Lisa's chair, the armrest, then gave it up along the way. Beneath the Madrid paint, the same armrest waits, drawn in the same spot, never painted either.

A man painted this panel knowing what the Mona Lisa hides beneath its paint. That fact rules out almost every explanation. One of the last still standing: Leonardo da Vinci painted both Mona Lisas with his own hand.

Every summer, more than a million people cross the German Baltic island of Rügen.

Almost all of them come for the same sight. Tall white cliffs plunging into the sea, the ones a painter made famous two centuries ago.

And all of that tourism started with a single painting.

Its creator is Caspar David Friedrich. He is a star again. In early 2025, the Metropolitan Museum in New York gave him his first major American retrospective. 300,000 visitors in three months.

The painting itself shows three figures at the edge of a precipice, on a summer afternoon. It was painted around 1818, and it now hangs at the Kunst Museum Winterthur, in Switzerland.

Three walkers, a cliff, the sea. An ordinary scene, or so it seems.

We are going to look at it detail by detail.

The Setting

First, where are we.

Rügen sits in the Baltic Sea, off the northern coast of Germany, facing Scandinavia. From its harbors, ferries still leave today for Sweden and Denmark.

The cliffs in the painting are on its northeastern tip, at the Stubbenkammer, already one of the most famous viewpoints in the region in Friedrich's day. The chalk here dates back to the Cretaceous, 70 million years, and the rock face crumbles into the sea without stopping.

Friedrich was born just across the water, in Greifswald, on the mainland. He had known these cliffs since childhood, and he had come to walk them alone, several times.

And yet the landscape he paints does not exist.

No visitor will ever see this view. Friedrich took two different spots on the same coast and combined them on a single canvas, to build a precipice that cannot exist. He moves the rocks, straightens the walls, closes the cliff around his three figures.

This is no accident. Friedrich never paints from life. He walks for whole days along the coasts, stops for hours in front of a tree or a bank of fog, then goes back to the studio and composes, from memory, landscapes that exist nowhere.

His rule fits in a single line: a painter should paint not only what he sees in front of him, but what he sees inside himself.

The Man in the Middle

Look at the man in the middle.

He is bent forward, almost lying on the ground, his body tipped toward the drop. His left hand digs into the earth, his only anchor. His right hand reaches toward a shrub clinging to the very edge of the cliff. Beside him, in the grass, a hat has fallen.

It is the painter. Caspar David Friedrich, 43 years old, a man his friends described as gnawed by a sadness he never explained.

And Friedrich almost never paints himself. His figures are usually seen from behind, faceless, reduced to whatever they are looking at. To find him slipped into one of his own canvases is a rare exception in his entire career.

The Woman in Red

On the left, a little lower down the slope, a second figure.

A young woman kneeling at the edge of the chasm, in a red dress, a white bonnet on her hair. She is shown in three-quarter view, her right hand reaching toward a shrub clinging to the very brink.

Look closely at that shrub. It is almost entirely dry, gray, dead. Except around her head, where a few twigs are coming back to life, right at the level of her face.

Her name is Caroline Bommer, 24 years old, the daughter of a Dresden dyer.

In January 1818, six months before this painting, she married Friedrich in a Dresden chapel, almost in secret. The marriage stunned everyone around him.

Because Friedrich was a hardened bachelor. He lived alone in a bare room at the Dresden Academy, silent, difficult, the kind of man everyone assumed would never marry. At 43, he marries without telling a soul. His friends hear about it from other people.

The Man on the Right

On the right, the third figure.

A young man in a light green coat, leaning against the trunk of a dead tree, his feet on the thin branches clinging to the edge of the cliff. He is looking at the sea.

This is Christian, Caspar David's brother, five years younger. A carpenter, married as well.

Friedrich could have gone on his honeymoon alone with Caroline. He insisted on bringing this brother along.

So the three figures in the painting are the three people closest to the painter at this point in his life, gathered at the edge of the same void.

The Two Sailboats

Follow Christian’s gaze. He is not looking at the chasm below his feet, he is looking at the sea. Two sailboats are out there, one fairly close to shore, the other a little farther off.

These sails come back everywhere in Friedrich's work. A boat setting out to sea is, for him, the image of a life leaving for the other shore. He painted dozens of harbors at dusk and ships pulling away from land.

These two sailboats are going to matter.

The Colors

Step back for a moment. Look at nothing but the colors of the three figures.

Caroline's red. Friedrich's blue. Christian's green.

These are not random colors. Since the Christian Middle Ages, they are the colors of the three great virtues. Red for Charity, for love. Blue for Faith. Green for Hope.

Friedrich is a devout Lutheran, close to a pastor from Rügen who preached a simple idea: nature is a place of prayer, and a landscape truly looked at is worth a sermon.

So he dresses his loved ones as virtues. Love on his wife. Faith on himself. Hope on his younger brother.

The Structure

Step back again. Look at the whole canvas.

It holds together in three stacked bands.

At the bottom, green. The grass, the branches, the three walkers. This is the living.

In the middle, white. The chalk dropping straight down, dead rock, fossil, a wall of bone. This is death.

In the distance, blue. Sea and sky blend with no dividing line. This is the infinite.

And the three figures stand exactly on the seam, where the green ends and the white begins. Where the living tips over into death.

It is Friedrich who placed them there, all three, at the exact edge where the living stops.

The Gesture

One detail in this painting is off.

Friedrich spent his life defending one rule: in a landscape, the person matters less than what the person is looking at. That is why his figures face away, anonymous, turned toward the horizon. He wrote it, repeated it, stood by it.

And here he does the exact opposite. He puts himself in the middle, alone, bent to the ground, one hand planted in the earth, the other reaching out over the chasm.

This figure is the key to the whole painting.

One evening in 1918, in a Paris apartment in Montparnasse.

An enormous man has been talking for hours. 31 years old, two hundred and sixty five pounds. Bulging eyes that never leave the man across from him.

He talks about himself. His ancestors, his childhood, what he had lived through, what he had seen.

The stories interlock, precise, full of names, places, entire lines of dialogue. None stumble. None contradict each other.

Night fell long ago. The lamp is lit. He is still talking.

Across from him, Élie Faure listens without a word. An art historian, the most respected art critic in France. His books are teaching all of Europe how to look at a painting.

He listens until the end. He does not challenge anything, does not ask anything.

Then he opens his notebook and writes, at the bottom of the page: this man is a mythomaniac.

The man across from him is named Diego Rivera. He will become the most famous painter in Mexico.

The Walls

Three years later, in the summer of 1921, in Mexico City.

The country is emerging from ten years of civil war. One million dead. The president who had ruled Mexico for thirty years has been driven out.

The war left two names on everyone's lips. In the north, Pancho Villa and his horsemen. In the south, in the state of Morelos, a peasant named Emiliano Zapata, who raised entire villages to take the land back from the big landowners.

Zapata's men rode into battle in sandals, straw hats on their heads, cartridge belts crossed over their chests. The whole country knew their silhouette.

The new regime wants to build a country. Its Minister of Education starts from a simple problem: most Mexicans cannot read.

So their history will be painted on the walls of ministries, schools, and palaces, large enough to be seen in passing. The minister summons the painters and gives them the walls.

Rivera, 34, gets the biggest commissions in the country. In 1923, the entire building of the Ministry of Education.

Three floors of galleries, more than a hundred panels. No one, anywhere in the world, is painting surfaces like these.

He paints the revolution there. Peasants bearing arms, workers, soldiers. And Zapata leading his white horse.

He joins the Communist Party. On the scaffolding, the Party's painters work with pistols at their belts.

Rivera becomes the official painter of the revolution.

The Paint Box

For months, reporters climb up the scaffolding to see him. He answers without coming down, brush in hand. He talks a lot, he talks well, and he talks about himself.

One day in the mid 1920s, one of them wants to know what Rivera had seen in the war.

Rivera sets down his brush and sits on the plank.

"It starts in Orizaba, with the textile workers, when the mills go on strike. I am 19. I put down my brushes and join the strikers."

"The strike turns ugly. The police arrive on horseback. An officer splits my skull open with a saber, right there, at the back of the head, near the neck."

"They throw me in prison with the other strikers. I eat the stale bread the inmates get. The best food of my whole life."

"A few years pass. I show my paintings at my old school, in Mexico City, and the president himself is set to come to the opening. The one who had run the country for thirty years."

"A plot comes together to kill him that day, inside the exhibition walls. With the school's director and an architect. My part is set in advance: bring the explosives into the building, hidden in my paint box, and lock them in a safe at the school."

"When the day comes, the police search everything, the rooms and the guests. They do not search the safe. The president, at the last moment, does not come."

"So I head south. I join Zapata's peasants, in Morelos."

"I become the bomb man. I carry them in my paint box. They were built by an old schoolmate, a man named Penioroja. They are calibrated to destroy only the baggage cars on trains. Not the passenger cars. Baggage only."

"I hold out for six months as an active rebel. Then a friend in high places warns me: they are going to shoot me. They smuggle me out of Mexico City lying flat in the back of a car."

In reality, Diego Rivera was in Paris. He was painting cubist still lifes in Montparnasse, paid every month by the government that had just fallen.

Each animal carried its own reputation long before it reached a canvas. Painters used what audiences already believed, then sometimes bent it, corrected it, or turned it upside down.

The Lion: Power, Faith, and Danger

The lion is the oldest symbol of raw power in Western art. Christian painters used it for the evangelist Mark and for Christ risen from the tomb. Court painters used it whenever a ruler wanted to look untouchable.

Peter Paul Rubens finished The Lion Hunt in 1621, now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Two lions twist into a wall of spears, horses, and falling men, in a painting Eugène Delacroix later called his favorite among all of Rubens hunting scenes.

The Wolf: Danger and Devotion

European folklore made the wolf a villain, the beast waiting in the forest for grandmothers and stray children. Roman legend told the opposite story. The she-wolf Lupa nursed the abandoned twins Romulus and Remus, and that image, the wolf as mother, spread across Roman and later Renaissance art.

The Owl: Wisdom, or Its Opposite

Athens is where the wise owl comes from. The bird belonged to the goddess Athena, and its presence marked knowledge and clear judgment across Greek art and coinage.

Painters north of the Alps read the same bird in reverse. In the work of Hieronymus Bosch and other Netherlandish artists, the owl often stands for folly or sin, precisely because it is a creature of the night that cannot bear daylight. The same feathers meant intelligence in Athens and blindness in Bruges.

The Snake: Temptation and Eternity

In Genesis, the serpent talks Eve into eating the forbidden fruit, and Western painters spent centuries illustrating that single moment. The snake became shorthand for temptation itself.

It also meant the opposite. A snake biting its own tail, the ouroboros, stood for eternity and the cycle of time, a symbol older than Christianity that artists kept borrowing. In the Vatican Museums, the marble group Laocoön and His Sons, rediscovered in Rome in 1506, shows serpents sent by the gods to kill a priest who tried to warn Troy. Danger, punishment, and endless time all lived in the same animal.

The Horse: Power and Propaganda

A horse under a ruler has meant status since ancient Rome, where equestrian statues of emperors filled public squares. Painters never stopped using the trick.

Jacques Louis David painted Napoleon Crossing the Alps in 1801, a rearing white stallion under a general pointing toward glory. The real crossing, made in 1800, happened on a mule, led carefully along an icy path. David painted the propaganda Napoleon wanted, not the animal that actually carried him.

The Bird: Freedom and the Soul

Birds carried the lightest symbolism and the heaviest one at once. A dove could mean peace or the Holy Spirit. Any small bird could stand for the soul, free of the body, or for the thin line between life and captivity.

Carel Fabritius painted The Goldfinch in 1654, now in the Mauritshuis in The Hague. The bird sits on top of its feeding box, a thin chain around one leg. It is one of the most famous prisoners in the history of painting, and it never once looks caged.

The Cat: Independence and Scandal

Ancient Egypt worshipped the cat as sacred to the goddess Bastet. Centuries later in Paris, the same animal could still cause a scandal.

Édouard Manet placed a small black cat, arched and hissing, at the foot of the bed in Olympia, shown at the Paris Salon of 1865. Critics already furious at the nude read the cat as one more sign of the woman's independence and her trade. The Musée d'Orsay still displays the painting that broke the rules of the Salon in a single afternoon.

The Butterfly: The Soul in Greek Art

In Greek, the word psyche means both soul and butterfly. Painters and sculptors used that overlap directly, showing the soul leaving the body as a small winged insect rather than a human figure.

A butterfly life is short, which made it a natural fit for vanitas paintings, the still lifes built to remind a viewer that beauty and time both run out. A single wing in the corner of a flower painting was often enough to make the point.

Animals in art, questions people ask

• What animal appears most often in Western painting? No single animal wins across every period, but the lion, the dog, and the horse keep returning, since all three could stand for power, loyalty, or status depending on the scene.

• What does a lion symbolize in art? Power, faith, and danger, depending on the context. In Christian painting it can mean the evangelist Mark or the risen Christ. In court portraits and hunting scenes it usually just means strength.

• Why is the owl linked to wisdom in art? The link comes from ancient Greece, where the owl belonged to Athena, goddess of wisdom. Christian painters in Northern Europe often reversed the meaning later, using the owl for folly instead.

• Are black cats always a symbol of evil in art history? No. In Manet's Olympia the black cat signals independence and sexuality rather than evil, and in ancient Egyptian art the cat was sacred rather than sinister. The purely evil black cat owes more to later folklore than to painting.

• What animal represents the soul in painting? The butterfly, borrowed from the Greek word psyche, which means both soul and butterfly. Birds carry a similar meaning in Christian art, especially the dove.

It may be the most famous painting in the world after the Mona Lisa. People even call it the Mona Lisa of the North.

She is everywhere: rings, tote bags, book covers, posters, refrigerator magnets. On screen, Scarlett Johansson lent the girl her own face. She is also the logo of Cool Stories About Art.

Two questions remain, and nobody answers them. Who is this woman? And did she ever exist at all?

Let's take a look together. You will never see this painting the same way again.

Lot Thirty-Eight

On May 16, 1696, in Amsterdam, the collection of a Delft printer went on the block. Twenty-one paintings by Johannes Vermeer came under the hammer that same day.

Lot thirty-eight was described in a single line: a tronie in antique dress, of uncommon artistry. It sold for 36 guilders.

A tronie, in seventeenth-century Dutch, is a head. No client commissioned it. Nobody sat for it.

A painter made one with no buyer in mind, to sell in the shop and to show anyone passing by what he could do. An unlikely costume, a studied expression, difficult light.

They were turned out in bulk. One of Vermeer's neighbors, a dealer on the Voldersgracht, a street in Delft, had more than seventy in stock the day he died.

That same afternoon, at the same sale, The Milkmaid sold for 175 guilders.

Two Guilders and Thirty Cents

Even in his lifetime, Vermeer could not live off his painting. He died in 1675, at forty-three, buried in debt.

Six weeks after his death, his widow handed two of his paintings to the neighborhood baker to settle a bread tab of 617 guilders.

After the 1696 sale, the canvas vanished. One hundred eighty-five years without a trace.

It resurfaced in 1881 in The Hague, at an estate sale on the Nobelstraat, a street in the city. The catalog read: head of a young girl, her head wrapped in a cloth. In the box for the painter: unknown.

The paint was lifting in places, and the grime made it hard to tell what it even was.

A collector carried it off for two guilders plus thirty cents in fees, about thirty euros today. His neighbor had come to the sale with him, and the two men had agreed not to bid against each other.

It was during the cleaning, the following year, that a signature reappeared in the upper left: IVMeer, the letters I, V, and M knotted into a single mark. They are not the first three letters of Vermeer, but the initials of his real name, Johannes van der Meer.

The Painter's Daughter

Vermeer had eleven living children. He lived in his mother-in-law's house in Delft, in the Catholic quarter, a house on the corner of an alley packed with an old woman, a married couple, a maid, and a brood of children.

The eldest was a girl. Her name was Maria.

The idea that Vermeer used his own daughter as a model is an old one. An American art historian devoted an entire book to it, and argues that the same face appears in three canvases.

The painter did not need to go looking for a model. He had one under his roof, free and available.

It all holds together. The house, the period, the absence of a patron.

Except one detail is off. When the painting was made, around 1665, Maria was eleven. And the face looking back at you is not eleven.

Washington, March 8, 1968. At the Shoreham Hotel, a man steps up to the podium with a few pages in his hand, sets them down, and takes a sip of water.

William Gaud runs the United States Agency for International Development. The room is full of economists, agronomists, and civil servants in gray suits. Gaud has come to talk about wheat.

New seed varieties, fertilizer, and pesticides have just turned the Indian and Pakistani harvests around, and the world still has no name for what is happening.

Gaud has found the word. Revolution.

Revolutions come with a color. Red has belonged to the Soviets since 1917, white to the Shah of Iran since 1963.

"I call it the Green Revolution."

That day, green means sacks of fertilizer.

Three years later, the word belongs to someone else.

Vancouver, September 15, 1971. An old trawler casts off with 12 men aboard, headed for Amchitka, an island in the Aleutians. The Americans are preparing an underground nuclear test there, and the crew intends to park the boat directly above the bomb so the Americans cannot set it off.

On deck, one of them raises two fingers in a V, the peace sign. Another answers.

"Make it a green peace."

The Coast Guard stops the boat short of the Aleutians, the test goes ahead on November 6, and nothing survives the expedition but those few words spoken on the deck. The name stays with the boat.

Fifteen years go by, and the color starts to pay.

Fiji, 1986. An American student walks into his hotel room and finds a card on the bed. It asks him to reuse his towel for the sake of the reef.

The hotel is busy extending its bungalows out over that same reef, and every towel left unwashed is money the hotel does not spend on laundry.

The student's name is Jay Westerveld. He gives the practice a name. Greenwashing.

Today green is on the detergent bottle that promises it works in cold water. On the bag sold as compostable. On the tomato carton, on the yogurt cup, on the washing machine that advertises less water per cycle.

An entire civilization has handed one color the job of saving it, and the idea is less than 60 years old.

The Wadj Sign

Three thousand years earlier, on the banks of the Nile, a single sign means green, fresh, young, and thriving. That sign is wadj. It is drawn as a papyrus stalk, and the same root gives the word for a new shoot and the word for a son.

The Egyptian language does not blur color and life in words alone. The tombs blur them too. Embalmers slip a wadj amulet cut from green feldspar around the dead man's neck, so he can begin the journey again. On the walls, Osiris, the god who goes i

nto the tomb and comes back every spring, has green skin.

Much later, a little farther east, the Quran describes the garden waiting for the chosen ones once the world has ended, and it dresses them in green garments of fine silk and brocade.

Europe reaches the same idea through its languages. In English, green, grass, and grow all go back to one old word for growing.

Everywhere, one answer. Green is the color of what lives.

Then, starting in the 14th century, Europe turns on it.

In England, green is the color of the man whose word is worth nothing, and it is the color spread over the tables where money changes hands. In Paris, the debtor who cannot pay walks the streets in a green cap, so that everyone can see who they are dealing with.

For several centuries, the color of life becomes the one to be wary of.

The reason is neither religious nor moral.

She looks sad.

That is the first thing you get. A young woman, standing behind a counter, in the middle of a room full of people having a good time, and her eyes are somewhere else.

The painting is called A Bar at the Folies Bergère. It is the last major work Édouard Manet ever painted, in 1882, a year before he died.

In front of her, bottles, a bowl of fruit, two roses in a glass.

An ordinary night out, or so it seems.

We are going to look at it detail by detail.

Two Green Feet

At the very top left of the painting, two small feet in green slippers hang in the air. The frame cuts the legs off at mid thigh.

A trapeze artist is working above everyone's heads while the room drinks.

The house opened in 1869, on the site of a mattress shop. A single evening there mixed dancers, an operetta, a pantomime, performing animals and acrobats.

The aerial acts filled the room. An American woman from Louisiana, Leona Dare, reigned there as the new queen of the trapeze.

Out of the whole show, Manet kept only what a man leaning on the counter would have caught sight of.

Two feet.

The Gold Bar

The woman behind the counter rests her hands flat on the marble. Follow the line of her wrists, first to the left, then to the right.

A gold bar crosses the painting at exactly that level. It is the frame of a mirror, and that mirror covers the entire wall behind her.

The crowd on the balcony, the chandeliers, the woman leaning on the railing watching through opera glasses: all of it is happening behind us, and it comes back to us through the glass.

She and her bottles are painted in sharp focus. Everything else dissolves, down to the faces on the balcony.

We are not looking at this scene from a museum room.

We are standing inside the hall, on the customers' side, one step from the marble.

The Counter

Four drinks occupy the marble.

At both ends, champagne, gold foil turned toward us. The most expensive bottle in the house, the one you order so that people can watch you order it.

In the middle, a green liqueur, a red wine, and a footed crystal bowl overflowing with oranges.

Then two brown bottles marked with a red triangle. Bass, an English pale ale.

The Folies Bergère lives off English and American visitors, and the Paris of those years is obsessed with everything that comes from London.

One last detail on that marble. The white label on the wine, far left, carries the painter's name and the year.

Manet signs his other canvases in a corner. This one, he signed in the exact spot where a manufacturer prints his brand.

The Black Ribbon

Move up to her throat.

A black velvet ribbon is tied tight around it, with a locket resting on her skin.

The rest of what she wears belongs to the house, which dresses its barmaids: dark velvet jacket, wide neckline trimmed with lace, lace at the wrists.

The ribbon comes from further back. Manet had tied an identical one around another woman's throat, seventeen years earlier.

That painting is called Olympia, and it remains the greatest scandal in the history of modern art.

Her Face

Her eyelids are lowered, and her gaze drifts slightly to our left, past us.

Makeup holds the face together: red cheeks, a sharply drawn mouth, bangs combed straight.

She has been prepared to be looked at.

The Reflection That Does Not Add Up

Her reflection takes up the top right of the painting. Same dress, same hair, same pale bodice.

The posture is another matter entirely.

In front of us she stands straight, arms braced, perfectly still. In the glass she is leaning forward, shoulders dropped, her head tilted toward a man in a top hat who is speaking to her from very close.

Stand up and lean forward in front of a mirror. Your reflection stays behind you. It never slides off to the side.

Suzon's drifts far to the right.

And the man in the top hat, who would have to be planted right in front of her to speak to her from that distance, occupies no space at all on our side of the counter.

No mirror on earth produces this image.

A painter of that caliber does not make a mistake about a reflection. He faked it on purpose, and his contemporaries saw nothing in it but bad draftsmanship.

This is not a clumsy piece of perspective. It is the key to the painting.

It tells you who this woman is, and what we are doing, standing in front of her.

Cadaqués, July 1929. The sun is not up yet. A 25 year old man walks down the dirt path to the beach, a towel rolled up under his arm.

Down below, the beach is empty. He sets the towel down, undresses and walks into the water.

He swims straight out, then comes back and gets dressed before the village wakes.

The local boys know how to make him scream. All it takes is a grasshopper slipped down his collar, and he tears off his shirt and runs.

He climbs back up to his father's house, set apart from the village, right on the water. He goes upstairs to paint.

Since spring, the same shape keeps turning up on every canvas. A big yellow head, lying on its nose, its lashes enormous, its one eye closed.

Where the mouth should be, nothing.

His name is Salvador Dalí. He is 25 and he has never touched a woman.

If he did, he is certain, it would kill him.

On the Gravel

One afternoon, a car comes in from Paris and stops in front of the house. Doors slam. Suitcases hit the gravel.

From an upstairs window, Dalí watches his visitors arrive.

The first one out is a Belgian dealer. He has just opened a gallery in Paris, and he wants to see what this boy paints. Paris has been talking about him since spring.

An 11 year old girl bolts for the sea ahead of everyone.

Her father climbs out behind her. 33, with a low voice. Paul Éluard, the great Surrealist poet, the one everyone in Paris reads.

And behind him, his wife.

Dalí comes down, shakes hands, helps carry a trunk. Night falls on the small house with all those people in it.

By the Boats

The next day, on the beach, the poet's wife lays her towel down near the boats pulled up on the sand. She pulls off her swimsuit top and walks into the water.

Two fishermen straighten up. The village talks about it for days.

Her name is Gala. Russian, 34, married to the poet since the war.

For three years she has lived with her husband and another man under the same roof, in plain view of everyone, and he has never said a word against it.

She swims far out, rolls onto her back, takes her time coming back in.

Dalí watches her from farther up the beach. He does not go into the water.

What he knows about sex he learned as a child in his parents' living room, from a medical book his father left open on the piano before leaving for work.

Full page photographs. Genitals eaten away, mouths turned to holes, noses gnawed to the bone. What syphilis does to a body.

That is what sex is to him.

He walks back up to the house without a word.

The Silk Shirt

The next morning, in his room, he gets ready for her.

He tears his best silk shirt to pieces. The razor goes under his arms until they bleed, and he spreads the blood across his chest.

He mixes fish glue and goat dung and smears it over his torso and legs. He pulls his swimsuit on inside out. A red geranium behind his ear.

Then he looks at himself in the mirror.

He stays there a long time. The red of the flower, the dried blood, the smell in the closed room.

At the last moment, he loses his nerve.

He takes it all off, puts on a clean shirt and goes down to lunch looking the way he does any other day.

She is already at the table. He opens his mouth to speak to her.

A wild laugh comes out instead. It rises on its own, doubles him over, and will not stop.

The others wait, forks in the air, and nobody knows where to look.

Gala does not laugh. She watches him the whole time.

The Husband's Portrait

For the next few days he avoids her and comes down only for meals. Her husband, meanwhile, agrees to sit for Dalí. Éluard takes his place in the light from the window.

Dalí picks up a tiny canvas, barely bigger than a sheet of paper, and a fine brush. He paints the face of the man whose wife he has been watching for a week, the heavy eyelids, the closed mouth, the gray skin.

Behind that head, in the background of the small painting, he lays the yellow shape down again, lying on its nose.

The portrait stalls.

Through the window, he sees her look up at him.

The Paris Train

In mid August, he goes down to the beach by the dirt path, out of sight.

One morning she catches up with him, takes his hand, and they walk the rest of the way side by side.

In early September, the car takes the group to the station at Figueres. Her husband climbs into the car, lowers the window, waves.

Gala stays on the platform. So does the girl.

The train pulls out, headed north. She watches it go.

In Cadaqués, the summer people head home. Shutters close along the bay. The boats stay up on the sand.

A Fresh Canvas

In the days that follow, he stretches a new canvas, larger than anything he has painted all summer.

He sets it against the wall and starts the same shape again. This time it fills the whole canvas.

An enormous head, lying on its nose, the nose crushed into the ground.

The yellow comes first, a wax yellow, a thin coat across the whole cheek. The red goes on top, at the cheekbones, laid on like rouge.

The lashes come next, long and black, set down one by one on an eyelid that will never open.

At the End of the Path

In late September, they set out on foot along the trail that follows the coast.

The path climbs. The ground is dry. Below, the water is a hard blue.

At the end, the land stops. This is the cape, a spit of schist running out into the sea. The tramontana has eaten the stone away, and the rocks there have taken the shapes of animals, skulls, bodies lying down.

He sits down in front of one of them, the way he has since he was a child.

He turns to her and asks what she wants him to do to her.

Every hell in cinema comes from the same place.

In 1916, D.W. Griffith is shooting Intolerance and needs to know what the gate of Babylon might look like. He finds it in the paintings of an English artist who had died sixty years earlier.

Ray Harryhausen, the man who built the skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts and the monsters in Clash of the Titans, called him one of the first art directors in motion pictures.

An art director born in 1789.

His name is John Martin, and he paints Pandemonium in 1841. The painting hangs in the Louvre today.

You would swear you were looking at Peter Jackson's Mordor.

The palace at the back

A river of molten lava.

An army on the move.

At the end of the road, an immense palace, and in front of the army a leader with his arms raised.

Everyone reads the same scene. The forces of evil are marching into battle, and that palace is the fortress they are about to take.

The palace says otherwise.

A building under siege carries marks. A breach in the wall, a fallen column, smoke pouring out of a window.

None of that here.

The facade runs from one edge of the painting to the other without a single crack, the columns stand straight, and a steady light burns behind them, floor after floor, along the entire length.

On the first level, stone serpents breathe fire. Higher up, ancient pillars and frescoes.

Nothing threatens this building, and no one is defending it. It is new. It took less than an hour to build.

This army has not come to take it. It has been summoned there, and what you are looking at is opening day.

And this is only the beginning.

Ask the people around you: who invented Cubism?

You will hear one name, always the same one.

And yet, on the day Cubism got its name, it was not in front of a painting by Picasso.

The critic who thought he was mocking

Paris, November 1908.

A small gallery at 28 rue Vignon, behind the church of the Madeleine.

A single room. A beginner dealer of 24, Daniel Henry Kahnweiler.

And on the walls, a whole exhibition of landscapes from the south of France, turned down a few weeks earlier by the jury of the Salon d'Automne, the great annual show of new painting.

In front of these canvases, a visitor frowns. Louis Vauxcelles, one of the most widely read art critics in Paris.

He looks at these hills where the houses have become ochre blocks, stacked one on top of the other, without a door, without a windowpane.

As if a giant child had built a village out of wooden cubes.

On 14 November, in the newspaper Gil Blas, his column lands:

He despises form, reduces everything, sites and figures and houses, to geometric schemas, to cubes.

Vauxcelles thinks he is burying a fashion in three lines. He has just given its name to the movement that will dominate the twentieth century.

The whole world has forgotten one detail: the painter of those canvases is not called Picasso.

He is a big strapping fellow of 26, broad in the shoulders, come up from Le Havre, a port in Normandy. Son and grandson of house painters.

He learned to imitate fake wood and fake marble before he ever touched an easel. In the evening, he boxes.

His name is Georges Braque.

Cézanne's lesson

A year before the mockery, in October 1907, the same Salon d'Automne devotes two rooms to a painter who had died the year before, Paul Cézanne. 56 canvases.

In those rooms of the Grand Palais, where the Salon is held every autumn, one visitor comes back day after day. The big fellow from Le Havre.

Braque moves slowly, stops, steps back.

In front of him, the Sainte Victoire mountain painted and repainted, turned into a play of facets. A white tablecloth that seems carved out of rock.

Cézanne's letters to a young painter have just been published in a review. Braque learns passages of them by heart.

One sentence above all:

Treat nature by the cylinder, the sphere, the cone.

Most visitors read it as an old master's advice. Braque takes it literally.

In the summer of 1908, he leaves Paris for the south. He sets up his easel at L'Estaque, a fishing village near Marseille, where Cézanne used to paint.

He pushes the sentence all the way. The houses become blocks, the trees volumes, the village a stack of cubes.

In the autumn, he returns to Paris with his canvases. The Salon d'Automne jury turns them down. Kahnweiler hangs them. Vauxcelles mocks them.

Cubism has just been born there, exactly there: with Braque, in Cézanne's footsteps.

But in Montmartre, another painter has taken the retrospective full in the face.

Roped together

A few streets from Braque's studio lives a Spaniard of the same age, small, black eyes, as loud as the Norman is silent. His name is Pablo Picasso.

The poet Guillaume Apollinaire, a friend of both, introduced them a few months earlier.

Everything sets them apart. Braque moves forward like a craftsman, step by step. Picasso charges, smashes, starts again.

He too has walked the Cézanne rooms of the Grand Palais. He too is looking for the way out. But he attacks through another door: Spanish sculpture, African masks.

In his studio, an immense canvas that almost nobody has seen: five naked women with mask faces, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon.

From the winter of 1908, the two men become inseparable.

Almost every evening, they meet in one studio or the other. Each shows the day's canvas, the other passes judgment.

In the summer of 1909, Picasso leaves in his turn for the south, to Horta, a village in Spain. He brings back hills in blocks, like Braque a year earlier.

There they are, on the same road.

Together, they take the old master's idea further still. No longer painting the object as you see it from one single position, but as you know it: the violin from the front, from the side and from above, on the same canvas.

That is Cubism.

They even drain out the colour, browns, greys, so that nothing distracts from the form.

Their paintings end up looking so alike that the two men, on certain days, hesitate in front of their own canvases.

So they take a step no painter takes: they stop signing. No more name on the front, the signature moves to the back, hidden.

Two anonymous inventors of a shared machine.

From those years, one image will remain, and it is Braque's: “It was a little like being roped together on a mountain.”

Two men at either end of the same rope. When one climbs, the other climbs with him.

And then it all stops.

One August morning, on the platform of a station in Provence, the rope is cut. Braque says goodbye to Picasso and boards a train.

Picasso will become the most famous artist in the world. Braque will disappear from his own story.

Two and a half years will be enough. By the time Braque comes back, Cubism will have changed fathers.

Venice, September 11, 2007.

In the refectory of the monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore, 700 people are standing. Cardinals, officers in uniform, art historians.

They are looking at a bare wall.

The painting that covered it left on September 11, 1797, carried off by Bonaparte's soldiers. Two hundred and ten years ago, to the day.

Then the banquet comes back onto the wall.

Floor to ceiling, corner to corner: an enormous table, columns, a blue sky, 130 guests.

This is not the painting. It is a printed reproduction, at full size.

To make it, a Spanish team scanned the original at the Louvre at night, with the museum closed, on the condition that no one touch it. Two guards stayed in the room throughout the shoot.

The work is called The Wedding at Cana. It is the largest painting in the Louvre: nearly 70 square meters of canvas.

The story takes a few lines in the Gospel of John.

A wedding in a village in Galilee. The wine runs out in the middle of the meal. Jesus has six stone jars filled with water, and the water turns into wine. It is his first miracle.

A wedding, wine, 130 people at the table.

A celebration, or so it seems...

We are going to look at it detail by detail.

The Refectory Wall

The painting is commissioned on June 6, 1562 by the Benedictine monks of San Giorgio Maggiore, on the island facing Saint Mark's Square.

It is not made for a church. The monks want it in their refectory, the room where they take their meals.

The contract calls for a canvas the width and height of the end wall. Veronese is free to paint as many figures on it as he wants.

While he works, the monks house him, supply him with a barrel of wine, and feed him at their own table.

Above the door, he paints two angels holding a plaque. A single word is written on it: SILENTIUM. Among the Benedictines, you eat without speaking.

The monks will eat in front of this wall for 234 years.

The Architect

The room where Veronese sets up his scaffolding has just been rebuilt. The architect is named Andrea di Pietro della Gondola.

No one knows him by that name. He started out as a stonecutter at 13, a patron spotted him and gave him a working name: Palladio.

His name became a style, Palladianism.

In 1570, he publishes a manual in Venice, four volumes in which every one of his buildings is drawn and measured, ready to be copied.

The book travels to England, then to America. Thomas Jefferson designs Monticello and the University of Virginia with that volume on his desk, and behind him come the White House, the Capitol, and the Supreme Court.

In 2010, the United States Congress passed a resolution naming Palladio the father of American architecture.

Now look at the back of the painting. The columns, the marble balustrade, the staircase, the terrace on the upper level.

Those buildings are Palladio's. The two men have been working together for years, and Veronese paints one man's architecture into the other man's canvases.

In front of a Veronese, get in the habit of looking behind the figures. You will very often find Palladio's architecture there.

The monks ate in a room by Palladio, looking at a room by Palladio.

The Ones Giving the Party

Look to the far left, at the very end of the table.

A young blonde woman in a white and gold gown, pearls braided into her hair. Beside her, a man in a red mantle, wearing a pale turban.

These are the bride and groom. It is their wedding, their house, their wine.

They are pushed against the left edge, in the seat reserved for the least important guests. No one is looking at them.

The Gospel of John tells the story of the wedding at Cana without ever giving their names.

The place of honor, at the exact center of the table, is taken by a guest.

The Table

The cloth is white. The dishes are silver, some of them footed, and the knives have pale handles. On them, olives, small red fruits, slices of candied fruit.

None of this grows in Venice.

The sugar that candies the fruit comes from Cyprus, the spices from Alexandria, the silk from the Levant. The city produces almost nothing: it buys, it resells, and it takes its cut on the way through.

The glasses, on the other hand, are Venetian. Murano cristallo is the only perfectly transparent glass in Europe, and Venice forbids its glassmakers to leave the island in order to keep the process secret.

The colors too. This painting is the most colorful on the continent because Venice is the port where the pigments come ashore.

On the bodies, starched lace ruffs, fitted doublets, gold chains. And among them, turbans, caftans, Ottoman headdresses.

These are not costumes. This is the clientele of the Rialto, the great market of Venice, seated at the same cloth.

In the Bible, the wedding at Cana is a poor village wedding.

The subject is a miracle in Galilee. The painting is a portrait of Venice.

Four Names in the Crowd

Among these faces, four carry a name.

Suleiman the Magnificent, sultan of the Ottomans, has reigned for more than forty years over an empire running from Budapest to Baghdad. His fleet has driven Venice out of its last holdings in Greece.

Charles V ruled at the same time over Spain, Austria, the Low Countries, Naples, and the colonies of America. The two men spent their entire lives at war with each other.

Francis I, King of France, the man who bought the Mona Lisa. He allied himself with the sultan against the emperor: a most Christian king signing a military treaty with Islam, and all of Europe cries scandal.

Mary Tudor, Queen of England, married to Charles V's son.

Four crowns that spent forty years marrying, allying with, and fighting one another. Veronese seats them at the same cloth, in the crowd, without setting them apart from the other 126.

The Servant Pouring

In the lower right corner, a barefoot servant in a yellow tunic leans forward. He tips a large jar over a gold vessel.

What comes out is dark red. This is the miracle, happening.

The Gospel describes these vessels precisely: six stone jars, used for the ritual washing of the Jews before a meal. Jesus asks that they be filled with water to the brim.

Veronese keeps the stone of the text, but he carves his jars like furniture from a Venetian palace: white marble, masks, handles.

The miracle takes place down there, at ankle height, while the whole table is looking somewhere else.

One single guest already has this wine in his hand, at the other end of the table.

The Raised Glass

At the other end of the table, on the left, an old man in a striped headdress holds a tall glass between his thumb and forefinger, at chest height. He is studying it.

The Gospel gives him a title: he is the master of the feast, the man in charge of the cellar and of the service.

He tastes it. The wine is better than anything served since the start, and he has no idea where it came from: only the servants who filled the jars saw it appear.

So he sends for the bridegroom and takes issue with his method. You serve your best wine first, he says, and the ordinary wine at the end, once the guests are too merry to tell the difference. You have done the opposite.

The only man in the painting who has tasted the miracle reads it as a decision about wine service.

The Empty Glass

At the center of the table, immediately to the left of Jesus, a woman in a gray gown, hands resting in front of her. Over her hair, a veil edged in black.

This is Mary, his mother.

She is the one who notices first that the wine has run out, and who tells him. On the canvas, her hand points to an empty glass.

He answers her: “Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.”

The phrase is harsh. It means: this is not your concern, and this is not the moment.

She does not press him. She turns to the servants and tells them to do whatever he tells them.

Christ

One step to the right, at the exact center of the canvas.

He faces us, in a red tunic and a blue mantle, hands resting on the cloth.

The whole table is eating, drinking, leaning toward a neighbor, passing a dish. He looks straight ahead, out of the painting, at whoever is looking at him.

Now step back, far enough to see the whole canvas.

A vertical line cuts the painting at its exact middle. It starts at the bottom, at a small table where four musicians are playing, and it runs straight up through the head of Christ.

Veronese has aligned four elements along that line, from the bottom up, in this order and no other.

It is a countdown, and it has nothing to do with a wedding.

Arles, summer of 1888.

Vincent van Gogh is 35, and he has just rented four rooms in a house painted yellow, on place Lamartine.

He writes to his brother Theo almost every day.

In one of those letters, he lays down a rule that will decide everything he paints from then on.

There is no blue without orange.

This color has something blue, red and green do not have.

Europe painted it for thousands of years before it had a word for it.

Its story begins on a limestone wall, in the Dordogne, in southwest France.

The Horse at Lascaux

On the wall of a cave, a horse has been running for 17,000 years.

Its coat is orange.

Whoever painted it did not go far to find the color. He picked up dirt.

Some soils contain iron oxides. You wash them, you dry them, you grind them, and what is left is a powder that runs from red to brown, passing through that warm shade in the middle.

That is ocher. Pigment makers still work this way today.

This orange costs nothing. It is under your feet, it does not fade, and the horse at Lascaux is still there to prove it.

It has one flaw.

It is dull.

This is the orange of earth, not the orange of fire. It can carry a shadow or a roof tile. It cannot carry a sky.

So Europe has an orange, but a weak one. Another exists, far cleaner, and you have to go three thousand kilometers to find it, in the tombs of Egypt.

The Stone from the Nile

Around 3000 BCE, on the banks of the Nile, painters no longer get their orange by grinding earth. They take it from a crystal.

It is called realgar. A stone of a saturated red orange, stronger than any earth, found near hot springs and volcanic ground.

It is also arsenic sulfide.

The Egyptians grind it for their tomb paintings. Indian, Chinese and Persian painters use it too, because the stone comes out of the ground where they live.

It has a golden yellow twin, orpiment, made of the same arsenic, which alchemists took for a lead toward gold.

European deposits are too poor to supply a workshop. So both stones arrive a trickle at a time, through apothecaries, and they serve as much to paint with as to kill rats.

Realgar also comes with a problem that painters discover the hard way.

Under strong light, it loses color and turns yellow. Mixed with oil, it cracks and blows apart the paint layer that carries it.

That is the only saturated orange available to a European workshop. An imported stone, toxic, and unstable on canvas.

Two thousand years later, between Persia and India, the same color is picked in a field.

Three Threads

In India, in Persia and in Southeast Asia, this orange does not come out of a mine. It comes out of fields of flowers.

The crocus blooms in autumn. At the heart of every flower, three red threads.

It takes about 170,000 flowers to get a kilo of dried threads, and all of it is picked by hand.

This is saffron. It dyes cloth a deep yellow orange, and for centuries it is the most expensive spice in the world. In much of Asia, the color is named after it.

Too expensive, in fact, to dye anything but court fabrics.

For everyday use, two plants give almost the same shade and cost nothing. Turmeric grows everywhere. Jackfruit wood is cut into chips and boiled.

The monks

These are the two plants Buddhist monks use to dye their robes. Their rule forbids them from owning anything, so they stitch together discarded cloth and dye it with whatever grows by the roadside.

The cheapest garment in the world becomes the mark of those who have given everything up, and it has stayed that way. Monks still wear it today.

Hindu ascetics dress in the same shade, for the same reason. India will later put it at the top of its flag.

When that same shade reaches Rome, its meaning flips completely.

The Drunken God

What is ordinary in the markets of India becomes a luxury in the markets of Rome.

Saffron travels by caravan from Persia, and cloth dyed this color is expensive. So you wear it to show that you can afford it, at banquets and at feasts.

A color of spending and excess ends up belonging to the god of spending and excess. Dionysus for the Greeks, Bacchus for the Romans, god of wine and of going too far.

He is shown draped in orange, and so are the women who follow him.

In India, the color of the man who has left everything behind. In Rome, the color of the man who denies himself nothing.

Medieval Europe will inherit the second reading. A color of pleasure and celebration, used sparingly because it stays out of reach.

Yellow Red

Unable to buy the stone from the East, medieval workshops make their own orange.

The main one is red lead. You get it by heating lead, it costs almost nothing, and illuminators, the painters who decorate manuscripts by hand, cover their pages with it.

This pigment is so common in books that it ends up naming the work itself. To paint with red lead is miniare in Latin. That verb is where the word miniature comes from.

So Europe has two oranges it can produce on its own, and neither is the right one. Ocher is dull. Red lead leans toward red and darkens over the years.

Saturated orange, the one that tilts neither toward earth nor toward red, remains an import.

One city has it

One city in Europe gets it without trouble, and that city is a port.

Everything coming from the Levant enters through the docks of Venice. From the 1490s on, realgar arrives there regularly, and it is sold in shops by merchants whose trade exists nowhere else in Europe, the vendecolori.

A Venetian painter buys in one morning what a Florentine painter has to order from far away.

Titian has it ground for the drapery of the cymbal player in his Bacchus and Ariadne, painted between 1520 and 1523. Veronese and Tintoretto do the same, and this orange becomes a signature of the city.

Everywhere else in Europe, painters stay with ocher and red lead.

And still no word

For the color itself, though, Europe still has no vocabulary.

It is in the tombs, on the robes of monks, on the back of Bacchus, in books and on Venetian drapery. Painters measure it out by the gram, illuminators handle it every day.

And when they have to name it, everyone improvises.

In Old English, they say geoluread. Two words stuck together: yellow red.

In medieval French, they circle around it, they describe it, they compare it.

You do not name what you do not own.

It will take a ship.

A cargo out of Asia, and a word that will have crossed Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic and Spanish before it gets here.

The day that cargo lands in Europe, the color finally gets a name.

And from that day on, everything moves fast…

Cushing, Maine. July 12, 1939.

A car comes up a dirt road between two fields that run down to the sea.

At the wheel, a 17 year old girl who learned to drive a few weeks ago.

Her name is Betsy James. She has spent her summers here since she was a child.

Beside her, a boy she met this morning. He turns 22 today.

His name is Andrew Wyeth.

At the end of the road, a gray wooden house. Tall, unpainted, fourteen rooms, standing alone at the top of a slope. Barns around it, and nothing else all the way to the horizon.

A man comes out of the fields to greet them. Alvaro Olson, soil on his hands. This land has belonged to his family since the 1750s, and he works it alone.

In the kitchen, a woman is sitting. His sister, 46, who keeps the house and speaks to them in a steady voice, without getting up.

That day, Wyeth barely looks at her. All he sees is the house.

The light coming through the bare windows. The proportions of the building. That field falling toward the water without a single tree to stop it.

Ten months later, he marries Betsy.

What She Refuses

The Olsons open their door to no one. Not to neighbors, not to the curious.

To him, they open it.

The first years, he comes with Betsy. Then he comes alone.

Then he has the run of the house, a room upstairs where he carries up his panels, and the right to work there whenever he likes.

In that house, he is not Andrew Wyeth. He is Andy.

He comes back every summer. He will make close to three hundred works here.

He paints Christina sitting at the kitchen table. By the window, with the geraniums. On the stone doorstep, in profile, looking out at the field.

She is always sitting, and she never stands up.

As a child, Christina walked. Then the legs began to give way, and by her thirties they no longer carried her at all.

The nerves break down, the muscles waste away, and it never stops. It is Charcot Marie Tooth disease.

There is no electricity in the house, no running water, an oil lamp and a wood stove.

She cooks there, she does the washing, she keeps all fourteen rooms.

She moves along the ground. Palms flat, forearms pushing, her body following, her legs dragging behind.

That is how she goes from one room to the next, how she gets down the stairs, how she gets out into the grass.

Someone brings her a wheelchair. She will not have it.

People offer an arm, something to lean on, to carry her. She refuses that too.

Alvaro gave up lobster fishing in 1922 to take over the family land. He has slept under the same roof as her ever since, and she asks nothing of him either.

Nine summers go by like that.

May 1948. Wyeth is upstairs, at the window.

Below, the field runs down toward the sea. The grass is tall, dry, still flattened by winter.

A figure is set down in it, a long way from the house. A pale pink dress among the stalks.

It is Christina. She has gone down to the bottom of the slope to pick flowers for the house, and she is coming back up.

She sets her palms flat in the grass. She pushes with her forearms. Her body follows.

She stops. She rests her head a moment. She starts again.

A yard. Another yard.

In places the grass comes almost to her shoulders. She disappears into it, then comes out again a little higher up.

There is about a hundred yards between her and the door. She is 55. It takes her long minutes.

Wyeth does not go down.

If he crossed the field to lift her up, she would send him back to the house. Sharply.

So he stays at the window.

He does not take his eyes off her, until she disappears below the sill.

That evening, he has dinner with Betsy.

He barely speaks. He is still up there, behind the glass.

Halfway through the meal, he pushes back his chair and leaves the table.

In that field, there was nothing he could do for her.

He is going to spend the summer helping her another way.

1/10 | Anna Weyant (born 1995)

In May 2022, Gagosian Gallery signed a twenty seven year old Canadian painter. She was the youngest artist Larry Gagosian had ever taken on.

Anna Weyant was born in Calgary. She had been posting to Instagram, one small canvas at a time. That is how the gallery world found her.

She paints women. Round faced, big eyed, half comic, half haunted. She paints still lifes of cakes and cocktails that could belong on a Dutch table from 1650. The Wall Street Journal called her the millennial Botticelli.

Her prices went from a few thousand dollars to more than a million in three years. She was in a relationship with Larry Gagosian for several years, a detail the art world could not stop discussing.

In 2025, she had her first solo institutional show at the Museo Nacional Thyssen Bornemisza in Madrid, her canvases hung next to the Frans Hals and Judith Leyster works that had shaped her.

2/10 | Kawase Hasui (1883 to 1957)

The Kawase family sold rope and thread from a wholesale shop in the Shiba district of Tokyo. The son, Kawase Hasui, was expected to take over.

He wanted to paint. His parents refused. He was only freed the day his sister married a man who took over the shop in his place.

Kawase was 26 by then. He asked the respected nihonga painter Kiyokata Kaburagi for lessons. Kaburagi told him he was too old to start seriously. Kaburagi eventually accepted him anyway.

With the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, Hasui invented the shin hanga movement, the "new prints" that gave the Japanese woodblock a second life in the 20th century.

He designed almost a thousand of them in forty years. Temples in the snow, bridges at dusk, boats in the night. The human figure is almost always tiny, almost always alone, almost always walking away.

In 1956, one year before his death, the Japanese government named him a Living National Treasure.

His original blocks are still being pulled from today.

Paris, a winter morning, around 1895.

An apartment at the foot of Montmartre, the shutters still half closed, a smell of coffee.

A man of sixty sits alone at his table. In front of him, a newspaper he does not open.

His maid reads it to him. Zoé, who has been with him for years, unfolds the pages every morning and reads aloud while he drinks.

What she reads is not the theater column. It is La Libre Parole, Édouard Drumont's paper, the most antisemitic sheet in France.

On the front page, day after day, the same refrain. The Jew is eating away at the nation. The Jew is the enemy.

His name is Edgar Degas. He is one of the greatest living painters. He is also a man almost alone, an old bachelor with no wife and no children, admired from a distance and approached by few.

Outside of painting, he has almost no one. A family, which is not his own. And two friends.

Within five years, what he listens to every morning will cost him all three.

A Family That Was Not His Own

That borrowed home is the Halévys.

Ludovic Halévy and he had known each other as boys, at the same school. As grown men, they never drifted apart.

Ludovic is one of the great names of the Paris theater. With his partner Henri Meilhac, he wrote the libretto of Carmen and most of the operettas that made the Paris of his day laugh.

A house at 22 rue de Douai, a salon that all of Paris society passed through, and a chair that, for forty years, has been Degas's.

He comes every Thursday for dinner, and two or three more times during the week. For a solitary man, it is the closest thing he has to a home. In that house, he is not treated as a guest. He is one of their own.

Some evenings, after the meal, he takes out a camera and turns the drawing room into a studio.

He puts out the lamps, keeps only one, arranges everyone like figures in a painting, then demands that no one move. He holds the pose for a minute, two minutes, in a half light no one dares to break.

Ludovic, his wife, their children, the guests of the evening, all of them still under the lamp while he counts the seconds under his breath.

Young Daniel, Ludovic's son, grew up with this stern old man who ruled over the dinners, and he worshipped him.

The Halévys were Jewish. And not by some distant accident of birth. They were one of the great Jewish families of French culture.

Ludovic's uncle, Fromental Halévy, had composed La Juive, The Jewess, the opera that all of Europe applauded in its theaters. For forty years, Degas had dined at the table of the heirs of the man who wrote La Juive.

It had never once given him pause.

Until 1894.

France Splits in Two

On January 5, 1895, in the great courtyard of the École Militaire, a captain is led out before the assembled troops.

An officer steps forward, tears off his stripes one by one, rips the buttons from his tunic, breaks his sword in two. The man stands at attention and shouts that they are degrading an innocent man.

Beyond the railings, a crowd shouts back: death to the Jews.

This staff officer, a Jewish Alsatian named Alfred Dreyfus, has just been convicted of selling secrets to Germany. He is sent to end his days in a cell on Devil's Island, a rock off the coast of French Guiana.

Was he convicted on evidence, or because he was a Jew?

For years, France will have room for no other question. People tear into each other over it in drawing rooms, come to blows over it in the street, brothers stop speaking, friendships of thirty years fall apart overnight.

And everywhere a hatred of Jews rises again, louder than it had been in a long time. The paper Zoé reads to Degas each morning has never sold so well.

Degas picks his side on the first day, and he will never move from it. To him, the army is right, the captain is guilty, and to doubt that guilt is already to betray.

One day, in his studio, a young woman is posing for him. The talk turns to the affair, and she lets slip that she is not sure Dreyfus is guilty.

Degas begins to scream. He shouts that she is Jewish, that she must be Jewish, and he throws her out before she has even finished dressing.

He would learn later that the model was Protestant.

The Last Thursday

There was still one place where his chair had not moved.

At the Halévys', they were on Dreyfus's side, they believed him innocent, and yet they went on setting Degas's place every Thursday, avoiding the subject, for as long as it could be borne.

On Thursday, November 25, 1897, the table is set as always, and his chair is waiting for him.

He sits down. He says almost nothing for the whole meal. Lips pressed shut, his eyes fixed on the ceiling, he seems to drift out of the room where he has dined a thousand times, while the conversation wears itself out working around what divides them.

At the end of dinner, Degas stands, takes his coat, and goes down the stairs of 22 rue de Douai.

He will never climb them again. In a single meal, without a word, he has just lost the only family he ever had.

He has two friends left to drive away…

At the museum in Antwerp, one wooden panel draws a particular kind of look. Not admiration. Closer to unease.

A woman sits there, crowned. One bare breast, perfectly round. Skin as white as the wax of a candle.

Around her, a wall of angels. Blood red, and midnight blue.

She looks like no other Virgin. More like an apparition, risen out of time.

The unease is old. People have always spoken of her coldness, her strangeness, of a figure almost out of place in a church.

She is the strangest Virgin in all of French painting. And the closer you look, the more every detail says the same thing. Something is wrong.

The panel was painted around 1452 by Jean Fouquet, the greatest French painter of his century, for Étienne Chevalier, treasurer to King Charles VII. It once had a second half, the man who kneels in prayer before her. The two were separated. That half now hangs in Berlin.

We are going to look at this painting, detail by detail.

The Skin

Her skin, first. It is what strikes you, and what unsettles you.

It is white. Not pale, white. The white of marble, of wax, of snow. No warmth, no flush, not a vein beneath the surface.

Fouquet knew how to paint living flesh. On the other panel, the men's faces are pink, ruddy, lined. Here, nothing. Smooth, cold flesh, drained of all its blood.

In time, people stopped calling her the Virgin. They nicknamed her the White Queen.

As if she were no longer quite a Virgin.

The Crown and the Ermine

Her mantle now. White, lined with ermine.

Ermine is no ordinary fur. It belongs to kings and princes, the cloak of power and blood. The mother of a carpenter from Nazareth does not wear it.

On her head, a heavy crown of pearls and precious stones.

You do not dress a saint this way. You dress a sovereign.

The Breast the Child Ignores

Now the detail everyone stares at, and no one explains.

The bodice is unlaced. The left breast is bare. Whole, round as a sphere, set very high, almost below the collarbone, where no breast belongs.

Usually, a Virgin baring her breast is nursing. It is the familiar image of the mother feeding the Christ Child.

Except here, the Child does not look at it. He reaches with neither mouth nor hand. He is turned the other way.

The breast is offered, and no one takes it. So this gesture means more than feeding. It is the key to the painting, and we are keeping it for the end.

The Wall of Angels

Step back. Everything around the woman is packed with angels.

No floor. No sky. No horizon. Not the slightest depth. Only these bodies pressed together, filling the entire surface.

Six are entirely red. Three entirely blue. These are not just any angels.

The red ones are seraphim. Their name means the burning ones, those consumed by the love of God. That is why they are painted the color of fire. The blue ones are cherubim, the order of knowledge and contemplation, the color of the sky.

They are the two highest ranks in the hierarchy of angels, the ones who stand closest to God. Fouquet painted only these two.

He did not place this woman in some ordinary heaven. He set her in the highest sphere, the one that touches the throne of God.

The Hidden Window

Step closer to the throne, right up against one of the polished black onyx orbs that adorn it.

On its surface, a tiny reflection. A window.

That window is nowhere in the painting. It comes from elsewhere, from a room we cannot see, where the light gets in. In a bead no wider than a fingernail, Fouquet painted the kind of detail only the Flemish masters could manage. The tiny proof that this apparition stands in a real place, lit by a real window.

And the Child is pointing to the way out. His arm is extended, the finger aimed not at his mother, but to the left, beyond the frame.

He is pointing at someone. Someone in the other half of the painting, the half that left for Berlin.

Let us go and see him.

The Man Who Prays

Here he is. Kneeling, hands joined, in a robe of red cloth with a fur collar. About fifty, his head shaved high on the forehead.

This is Étienne Chevalier. The son of a king's secretary, risen to become one of the most powerful men in the realm.

Look at his eyes. They are not fixed on the sky, or on a book, or on nothing. They are locked on the Virgin, in the other panel.

A rich and powerful man, on his knees, praying as he stares at a woman's face.

Hold on to that gaze. At the end, it will tell you what this prayer truly hides.

The Stone on the Book

Beside him, a second man, standing, his hand on Chevalier's shoulder. Saint Stephen, his patron saint, the saint he was named after.

In his hand, the closed Gospel. And resting on it, plainly displayed, a rough stone with cutting edges.

This is no ornament. It is the murder weapon.

Saint Stephen is the very first martyr in Christian history. He was stoned at the gates of Jerusalem, around the year 36, with stones like this one.

Before he died, the account of his death tells us, he saw heaven open and God appear to him. That is why he is prayed to as an intercessor. The man who has seen God face to face is the best placed to speak to him.

Blood beads on his skull, and runs down to his collar.

The Name in the Marble

Behind the two men, the setting. Pilasters, slabs of marble, gilded moldings. Architecture in the Italian style, straight, calculated.

Fouquet painted it because he had seen it with his own eyes. Around 1446, he made the journey to Rome, where he painted the portrait of the pope. He brought these columns back to France at a time when almost no one there knew this language.

And in the stone, in golden letters, the name of the patron. His name, Chevalier, runs on into his first name, Étienne, woven into the wall.

A man who carves his name into marble, beside God, forever. This painting is not only a prayer. It is a monument he is building for himself.

The Same Forehead

One last detail, before we leave the two men. Chevalier's forehead, shaved high on the skull. And the Virgin's, across from it.

It is the same. The same receding hairline, the same fashion, the one worn by the women of the French court at that exact date.

The mother of Christ and the king's treasurer wear their hair the same way.

This ageless, countryless Virgin, risen from heaven, wears the hairstyle of a lady you might have passed at court that very year.

And yet the format of this painting is nothing unusual. A donor presented by his patron saint, praying to the Virgin. They were painted by the hundreds.

What unsettles is her. This Virgin is not really one. Beneath the Queen of Heaven hides a real woman, one who wore this face and who lived.

We need her name. And what happened to her, one evening in February 1450…

Florence, Piazza Santa Trinita, a morning in 1503.

Six or seven men sit in the sun on the stone bench of the Spini palace. They have been arguing for a while over three lines of Dante that no one can untangle.

A man crosses the square. Fifty one years old, a long, neat beard, a short cloak the color of rose. Everyone in Florence knows him. Leonardo da Vinci.

They call out to him. They ask him to settle it.

At that same moment, another man comes around the corner. Short, stocky, his nose broken crooked, quick on his feet, his face closed. Michelangelo Buonarroti, 28.

Leonardo nods toward him.

“Michelangelo will explain it to you.”

Michelangelo stops. He hears a taunt.

“Explain it yourself, you who drew a horse to cast in bronze, who never knew how to cast it, and left it there out of shame.”

Leonardo says nothing. The blood rises to his face.

Michelangelo, before turning on his heel, drives it home.

“And those Milanese who believed you could.”

Two men who hate each other

Only the horse could reach him.

Leonardo spent seventeen years in Milan, in the service of Duke Ludovico Sforza, and everything there had turned around a horse. A bronze statue to the glory of the duke’s father, larger than any ever cast.

But no one had ever cast a bronze that size. For years, Leonardo looks for a way to pour seven meters of metal in a single go. He fills notebooks with calculations, tries, starts over. He never manages it.

What is left is a giant of clay, raised before the court in 1493. The war takes care of the rest. The bronze meant for the casting goes into cannons, the French seize Milan, and Gascon archers riddle the model with arrows, for sport.

Leonardo returns to Florence in 1500. A reputation follows him, a stubborn one, that of a man who begins everything and finishes nothing. Michelangelo has just pressed on it, in public, in a few words.

Between them it is a deep, bitter hatred, and all Florence knows it. Everything sets them apart. Leonardo is 51, finely dressed, fond of bright colors, a charm that fills the conversations. Michelangelo is 28. He lives alone, speaks little, bites when he speaks, and comes home white with marble dust.

His own blows, Leonardo keeps for his notebooks. There he settles his score with sculpture as a whole. The sculptor toils in noise and grime, his face caked with powder, his house full of chips, as if it had snowed indoors. The painter sits, well turned out, running a light brush over his canvas, music sometimes in the room.

The portrait aims at one man only, the short, stocky figure with the broken nose from Santa Trinita.

The giant

The sculptor he despises is the one all Florence is talking about. Because of a block of marble.

For almost 40 years, a colossal block has lain in the cathedral yard. Five meters tall, but thin, split by a flaw down the middle. Two sculptors went at it, then left it there for lost. They call it the Giant, and no one in Florence believes anything can still be made of it.

In 1501, the city takes the gamble and hands it to Michelangelo. He is 26, and already has a masterpiece behind him.

Two years earlier, in Rome, he carved a Pieta from the marble, a Virgin holding across her knees the body of her son, taken down from the cross. No one believes an unknown of that age could be its maker. One night, he slips back into the basilica and cuts his name across the Virgin’s sash. He will never sign anything again.

Then he goes at the Giant. Three years behind a fence. When the David finally emerges, Florence sees itself in him, a naked young man, sling over his shoulder, his eye fixed on an enemy no one can see.

Leonardo is not won over. He likes supple bodies, grace, muscle sensed beneath the skin. All that straining flesh leaves him cold.

In his notebooks, he writes that a figure loaded with muscle ends up looking like a sack of nuts, or a bunch of radishes.

On January 25, 1504, about thirty men gather to decide where to raise the David. Botticelli is there. So is Leonardo.

Most want it at the heart of the city, in front of the palace, where everyone passes. Leonardo pulls the other way. He argues for the Loggia dei Lanzi, the covered gallery on the side of the square. A fine spot, he says, sheltered from the weather.

Sheltered, and so out of the way. Under the vault, in the shade.

The city does not follow him. The colossus will stand outside, in full light, at the palace door. 40 men and four days to haul it there.

The same room

Two enemies in one city. And Florence has an idea.

On the top floor of the palace sleeps an immense hall, built ten years earlier for the five hundred citizens of the Grand Council. The wall to cover runs almost 50 meters, nearly half a football field. Room enough for two battles.

Half the wall to each of them. Side by side, close enough to touch elbows, before the eyes of the whole city. And from their hatred, two masterpieces will be made.

Soderini, head of the republic, signs the commission. His secretary follows the affair, a certain Machiavelli, who knows better than anyone what can be drawn from two men who hate each other.

They are free to choose the subject, so long as Florence comes out ahead. Leonardo takes Anghiari, a victory of 1440 over Milan. Michelangelo takes Cascina, a victory of 1364 over Pisa.

Then they disappear. The city lends each of them a great room, at opposite ends of Florence, and they shut themselves in with their cartoon, the full scale drawing that will later be traced onto the wall.

For months, no one sees what is taking shape behind the doors.

Outside, they are all anyone talks about. People pick a side, the old man or the young one. They place bets.

It remains to be seen which of the two will win on the wall…

In Arles, on the Place du Forum, a café is painted yellow and bears Van Gogh's name. People come to sit there for a drink, inside the setting of one of his best known paintings.

They are in the right place. This is where he set up his easel, one night in September 1888.

It is also where he paints his first starry sky.

But the café was repainted to look like the canvas. The night Van Gogh painted it, it was not yellow.

The painting hangs today at the Kröller Müller Museum, in Otterlo. You think you know all about it. A terrace, some tables, a summer evening.

You are wrong.

We are going to look at it, detail by detail.

The square

The café stands at the corner of the square, in the heart of town, a few minutes from the house Van Gogh has just rented.

That autumn, he takes up a habit that is rare for the time. He goes out at night, sets his easel on the cobblestones, and paints the street exactly as he has it before him.

Before him, night scenes were painted the next day, in the studio, from memory. He works in the dark, in front of the scene, by the light of the gas lamps.

Everything he paints here, he truly has before his eyes.

The lamp

Under the awning, a large gas lamp burns above the tables. It throws a thick yellow onto the façade, onto the chairs, and down over the cobblestones.

It is the only light in the painting. Everything that glows here comes down from it.

And that yellow is not the color of the café.

The wall was not yellow. It is the lamp that gilds it.

The people who repaint the real façade today are fixing into stone a color that only ever existed for one evening, in a light.

What he took out

Everything in this painting looks caught on the spot. The customers bent over their drinks, the street sinking away, the stars above the rooftops, set exactly where they truly stood that night over Arles.

And yet he reworks it all.

To the right of the shop stood Roman ruins. He erases them.

Gas has just reached Arles, and the square has filled with street lamps. Van Gogh keeps only one, above the tables. A single light where there were several.

He does not copy the square. He remakes it.

The customers

At the tables, under the awning, people are seated.

A café like this, at night, does not draw families. You find laborers there, soldiers from the garrison, night owls, the ones who stay when the rest of the town has closed.

Van Gogh gives them no faces. A few strokes are enough, a back, a hat, a shoulder hunched over a glass.

They sit in small groups, all turned toward the same point, at the center of the terrace.

The standing man

In the middle, a man stands upright.

He is the only one on his feet. The others are seated. He stays planted at the center, among the tables, in pale clothing that sets him apart from the rest.

They say he is the waiter, the one who serves. Maybe.

But look at how the terrace is built around him. The tables, the chairs, the customers, the street itself open out on either side of this man, as if arranged to place him there.

Keep him in mind.

The windows

Behind him, at the back, a window. Others run along the street, on the neighboring houses.

Compare them. The ones along the street are painted fast, in a few strokes.

The one at the back, right behind the head of the man in pale clothing, does not look like them. It is drawn with a care that no other one gets. Its bars are traced apart.

Remember it.

A door opens onto the interior, dark. On the threshold, a figure, one foot already on the other side, about to vanish.

One man alone leaves the light of the terrace for the darkness inside, while all the others stay.

Step back, and look at the whole scene.

Paris, boulevard de Clichy, a night in the winter of 1889. On the seventh floor of a Montmartre building, a studio lit by gas.

A man of 30 stands before a canvas a meter tall. He has taken off his top hat and laid his long dark frock coat over a chair.

On a table, a half eaten croissant and a piece of chocolate. What he eats almost every day, standing up, so as not to lose time.

In front of him, on the canvas, a woman powders her face.

He does not mix his colors. On the palette, the tones of the spectrum sit in small separate heaps, pure, like the colors in a brand new box of school paints.

The brush is fine. It taps the canvas. One dot, then another.

An orange dot beside a blue one. A pink dot against a green.

From ten centimeters away, you see the dots. From three meters, the eye blends them on its own, and the woman's skin takes on its volume.

The Impressionists, before him, had broken light into quick strokes. Seurat goes further. He breaks it into dots, each one calculated.

Two pure colors set against each other shine brighter than a dull mix on the palette. The mixing, he leaves to the eye of whoever looks.

He read it in the work of scientists who spent their lives on color, the chemist Chevreul, the physicist Rood.

Nowhere any black. The shadows on the back wall are not gray. They are made of opposite colors set side by side.

The yellow gas flame throws off every shade. In his head, he corrects each dot, works out what the color will become in daylight, in the hall where the canvas will hang in the spring.

This kind of painting is slow. His great canvas of the Grande Jatte took him two years.

The Notary

In the cafes where the painters gather, they call him the notary. The frock coat, the stiff collar, the hat, the look of an office clerk with no business in a studio.

Everything about him is in order. The colors lined up, the hours counted, every gesture measured.

Of his life, he says nothing. Signac, who thinks he is his friend, knows almost nothing about him. When someone asks, he answers beside the point, or he stays silent.

Almost every evening, he comes down from Montmartre, crosses Paris, and goes to dine at his mother's, 110 boulevard de Magenta. He sits down, he eats little, he leaves.

He has never had to sell a canvas. His father's money, made in real estate, is what he lives on.

The Woman

On the canvas, the woman fills almost all the space. Heavy, facing forward, laced into a corset, seated at a small dressing table on slender legs.

He does not make her prettier. He paints her as she is, heavy, the belly just barely rounded under the corset.

She holds a powder puff. She lays it on her skin in small touches.

The same motion as his, a few centimeters away, as he sets down his dots of color.

Her name is Madeleine Knobloch. Born in the 19th arrondissement, to a father the records do not name, to a mother of 18. A seamstress.

When a visitor climbs up to the studio, she leaves the room. None of his friends guesses her real place.

The Reflection

He turns back to the canvas. One corner is left to finish, at the top left.

There, against the back wall, he has painted a small bamboo frame. And inside the frame, a mirror.

In the mirror, a reflection. A man with a long face and a pointed beard, seated at his easel, a brush in his hand.

Himself.

Of all the canvases he has painted, this is the only time he puts himself inside one.

A man who says nothing about his life has set his own face beside hers.

The Visit

One evening, a knock. A painter has climbed the seven flights, a familiar face, one of the few he lets in.

Madeleine gets up and steps into the next room.

The friend moves toward the canvas. The woman, the table, the two little bottles. Then his eyes travel up to the corner, to the little bamboo mirror.

He points a finger at the reflection. He sneers.

Seurat does not move. He lets the other man finish.

The friend leaves without knowing what he has just set off.

Seurat waits for the sound of the footsteps to die away far below.

A bit of mockery has brushed against what he has been hiding for months.

By morning, the little mirror will be gone…

Look around a bit, and one name comes up fast. Caravaggio, his basket of fruit, around 1599. It's the painting everyone points to first. Except it shows up almost a century too late.

The real first one is much older. But before you go hunting for it, you have to know what you're looking for.

An object painted on a panel? A vase of flowers? A skull? The real question, the one that settles everything, is somewhere else. Do these objects have to be alone, or can they share the scene with a saint, a story, a symbol?

Because for more than a thousand years, the object only existed in painting to serve. It stands next to the saints. It decorates the biblical scenes. It hides a meaning. It never holds the frame on its own.

To find the first one that dared to, you have to go dig it up. We go back in time, and we rule out the false leads one by one. It starts in Pompeii, in the year 79.

Pompeii, year 79: the false lead

Vesuvius buries the city. On the walls of the Roman villas, frescoes show fish, poultry, eggs, fruit set out on shelves. The Romans called them xenia, gifts of hospitality rendered in paint.

We're almost there. Nothing but objects, painted for their own sake, the light catching the scales of a fish, the shadows falling exactly where they should.

But these are walls. The frescoes are part of a huge decorative scheme that runs across entire rooms and frames mythological scenes. You can't take them down. You can't carry them off. You can't own them.

And then the eruption wipes it all out. For fifteen centuries, nobody will even know Pompeii existed. No Renaissance painter will ever see these fish.

Dead end. We look elsewhere.

Padua, 1305: the first clue

Jump a thousand years, to Padua. A rich banker, Enrico Scrovegni, buys himself a private chapel and hires the star of the moment, Giotto, to paint the life of Christ and the Virgin across the walls.

On the arch above the altar, Giotto slips in an oddity. He paints two small chapels that don't exist. Vaults in trompe l'oeil, that illusion that fakes real depth, windows opening onto a blue sky, and hanging in the center of each, an iron lantern suspended in the void.

For the first time since antiquity, a painter gives an object its own space. The lantern goes with no one. It tells no story. It's just there.

The catch is that it's still a wall, inside a church, and a lantern for worship. You don't hang it in your living room. You don't sell it.

The trail warms up. That's all.

Flanders, 1434: the object gains weight

North again, a thousand kilometers away, in the wealthy trading cities of Flanders. The painters there have just tamed a technique that changes everything: oil paint. Suddenly you can render the reflection of a window on brass, the soft wax of a candle, the grain of wood.

In 1434, Jan van Eyck paints The Arnolfini Portrait. A couple in a room, and all around them, objects painted with almost insane precision. Oranges on the sill, a curved mirror, a lit candle, a little dog.

Your eye stops on them, no way around it. These objects start to rival the two people.

Except they stay in their service. Each one hides a meaning. The orange stands for paradise, the mirror for the eye of God that sees everything. The object still works for something other than itself.

Still not it. We move on.

Flanders, around 1452: an object finally alone

And here comes the first real jolt. Around 1452, Rogier van der Weyden takes a commission from the widow of a merchant, Jehan Braque, who has just died. A small triptych, made for a private home, not a church.

Open, it shows Christ and the saints. Closed, it shows something else.

On the outer left panel, a skull. Yellowed, empty sockets, propped on a broken brick, against a pitch black background. Above it, the family coat of arms. And along the frame, a line the skull seems to speak: my body was once beautiful, now it is food for worms.

Nothing else. The skull takes the whole panel. It's alone, it's the subject. For the first time, an object is no longer an extra at a saint's feet. It carries the scene by itself.

Only here's the thing. This skull lives on the back of a shutter, invisible as long as the triptych stays open. And it's a memento mori, a slap to remind you that you will die. Not a celebration of the world. Its opposite.

So close. And still, no.

Around 1485: flowers no one is holding

A generation later, Hans Memling paints the back of another portrait, a young man at prayer.

On the reverse, he sets down a simple vase of flowers. Irises, lilies, columbines, in an Italian majolica jug stamped with the monogram of Christ, on an Oriental rug.

Nobody around. Just these flowers, cut and arranged by a hand. A human, domestic gesture, a world away from the flowers growing in paradise in the great holy scenes.

It may be the first time a bouquet becomes a painting all on its own. Two problems, though. It still lives on the back of a panel, hidden most of the time. And it's still a prayer in disguise: the lilies for the Virgin's purity, the irises for her sorrows.

At this point, I'll admit it, I thought I had my culprit. We're one step away. This is where most people stop, satisfied. They're wrong.

Urbino, 1470s: the illusion in the wood

While the Flemish paint their reverses, the Italians come at the problem from another angle. In Urbino, Federico da Montefeltro, a warlord turned scholarly duke, has a tiny study built for himself. The lower walls are covered in marquetry, wood cut and inlaid to create a perfect illusion.

You'd swear you were seeing cupboards with their doors half open. Inside: astrolabes, compasses, books, a lute, pieces of armor. The neat clutter of a learned man.

You'd reach out to grab the lute. Every object has its light, its shadow, its place. No saint, no story, just things to look at for the pleasure of it.

This time, the spirit of still life is here, fully. And the format catches one last time. It's all fixed to the wall, impossible to take down or sell. And it isn't even painting. It's wood slotted into wood.

Add it up. It's always the same problem. The object is on a wall, or on the back of a panel, or beside a saint, or there to remind you of death. Never alone. Never for itself.

And then, one day in 1504, deep in Germany, one painter dared. A century before Caravaggio. He signed the first still life in history, and the world forgot him.
